Should I take lessons in Muay Thai or BJJ?

Yi Lin Z asked:

Hey everyone. I’m 15 years old and I’m just looking to get into shape and have fun and learn with martial arts. I’m completely a BEGINNER, and I’m over weight. I’m 5′9 and 180 pounds. Overall, in the end, because I probably only have the time for one arts at a time. Which martial arts should I take that’s more suited to lose some weight, tone & condition up? Thanks.

Either one would be a great way to shed some pounds and tone up. I recommend taking a trial class in both to see what one you enjoy the most if you must choose one. If you can find a school that offers both classes and take both, alternate if you have to. Make sure you research the school to be sure they are legit and have quality instructors.

Muay thai and BJJ both are great for losing weight, i have done both, but i am going to say to lose weight and get in better shape both are great but… i would lean more towards BJJ, in the end try both before making ur final decision

BJJ in my opinion. You can do BJJ for the rest of your life. How long do you expect to be able to do muay thai? At 15 you maybe have 20-25 before your skills really diminish. In BJJ provided that you remain healthy you can keep doing it till the day you die. Helio Gracie still trains and practices and he’s 95 years old. You’ll be lucky if you’re still doing muay thai at 40.
