bobby131@rocketmail.com asked: I know this question is a little vague but i would appreciate an answer that let me know how long it would usually take, how long it were take if practicioned twice a week or so and how long it would take if one spent everyday at it. For example could it be possible to obtain one in 3 years? cheers!
yep thanks that did help! but how could bj penn actually get it in 2 years? i know he is talented but how many hours a day/ week u think he was putting in?
The Ultimate Mma Strength And Conditioning Program
BJ Penn got it in 2 years… well thats because he is extremely talented.
most ppl gets it for 8 years. most mma fighters gets it around 6-10
did that help u?
good luck
About ten years for most people. I don’t know what the hell was going on with BJ Penn.
BJ Penn actually got it in 3 years.
While I don’t like his ego, I won’t deny the fact that he is a very talented fighter.
While the official training takes 3 years, BJ Penn actually has some basic training in BJJ when he was 17 years old with his neighbor (BJ Penn is his landlord actually) called Tom Callos, who has limited BJJ but is a black belt under Ernie Reyes Sr.
Penn I think got a bit under 1 year proper training with Tom Callos before he was introduced by Tom to Ralph Gracie in 1997 (2 years after he met Tom)
BJ Penn accomplishment is actually not really how fast he attain the black belt, but he actually was the first non-brazilian to win the world jiutjistu championship in Rio, Brazil, defeating people many years his senior.
Most people will get to brown in 5-6 years if they train daily. From then on, it depends on your school. Some BJJ schools have gone a bit McDojo-ey and make student go to brazil to some masters that hold a seminar (which the student have to pay big bucks) and then he got awarded black belt. Some other stories I heard require the students to wait and then a masters will come around and hold a seminar of some sort and then all the students have to attend (and pay) for the seminar to get their black belt. Others yet require accomplishment like winning tournament or several MMA fights to be awarded their black belt.
Is it possible to obtain one in 3 years? There are two ways.
1. You really are as talented as BJ Penn.
2. You study in a McDojo BJJ place, in which you can tell them that you will stay in the school if they guarantee a black belt in 3 years (black belt guarantee contract - famous in some McDojos)
Good Luck with your training.
A black belt takes longer than average in BJJ. Usually for a common person or the average, takes anywhere from 12-15 years. There are some like BJ Penn that got it within 2-3 years. But I believe, he trained non-stop 5-7 days a week for those years. People that tend to take it 2x a week, on and off, here and there, take about 15 years.
Most people I know that are brown, have been taking it for about 10 years. Most blackbelts I know, about 14-15 years.
There are exceptional phenoms too, I believe like BJ Penn, Marcelo Garcia, Etc.
One is not guaranteed a belt by simply going to a lot of classes. And there are nearly ZERO Jiu Jitsu mcdojos, since the community polices itself and literally wipes out those that are not legitimate. SEE source for one example.

How hard are you willing to work for it? Can you be dedicated? Can you spend the training time required to perfect the skills needed? Why is the belt important? There is no set time for shodan…it is all up to you.
The best I’ve seen it explained is think of it as a degree you get in school.
Blue Belt = Associates Degree = 1 1/2 to 2 yrs.
Purple Belt = Bachalors Degree = 4 to 5 yrs.
Brown Belt = Masters Degree = 6 to 7 yrs.
Black Belt = Ph. D. = 8 - 10 Years.
But again this is subjective. Obviously if you only go once a week and don’t put much of an effort out then it will take a long time, but if your a gym rat and go hard and really soak in the instruction you’ll probably move quicker than average.
Regardless, just work hard and learn what you can. If you don’t think about what rank you are, you’ll have fun and move at what seems like a faster pace because your not thinking about it. Just work hard and have fun, that’s the main thing.
it depends on the person, i’m pretty sure average is 10 years, but again it depends on the person, how often they train, if they are a quick learner. ect.
